Kettler Vito XL

Date Published: 2/7/08

The Kettler Vito XL is a solid mid-range elliptical machine. It is a well-built device, which is illustrated by the maximum user weight of 330 pounds and the lifetime warranty on the frame. The steel tubing construction makes for a sturdy machine, and we find that the heavy-duty 45-pound drive system and variable magnetic resistance deliver a very smooth, very quiet elliptical motion in both forward and reverse. There is enough top-end resistance on the Vito XL to provide a challenging workout to even very fit users. The footplates are adjustable, so you can vary the angle of the elliptical pattern; unfortunately, the stride length is limited to 16 inches, though this is common in most budget-to-mid-range elliptical machines.

The oversized LCD training computer is easy to read and clearly displays workout information such as elapsed time, distance covered, calories burned, heart rate and resistance. Heart rate is monitored via sensors that are built into the stationary handlebars or with an optional ear clip accessory. We find that these handgrip sensors are accurate enough, but took a long time to display a reading; this wouldn't be an issue if the sensors were located on the moving arms so you do not have to interrupt your upper body workout in order to take a pulse reading. To resolve this issue, Kettler does offer a cardio pulse set as an optional extra for the Vito XL; this will enable you to monitor your heart rate hands-free.

The training computer on this elliptical also enables you to set goals for total distance, time, calories and optimum training pulse range. It also offers a recovery pulse feature so that you can track the progress of your cardiovascular conditioning over time. Convenience features are limited on this elliptical; there is a handy water bottle holder and transport rollers for moving the machine across a room, for example. We also appreciate the floor leveler that is located beneath the rear base of the Vito XL; this ensures that the machine is stable even on uneven floors. This is great if you live in an old house or want to set up the Vito XL in a garage or basement where the flooring is less-than-perfect. The Kettler Vito XL is a good choice of elliptical machine, but it is far from the best.

Pros: Well constructed, plenty of resistance for a challenging workout, jumbo LCD, smooth elliptical motion
Cons: Small stride length, thin on features

Warranty
Lifetime, frame; 3 years, parts and electronics; 1 year, labor
