Kenmore Slide-In Range with Coils 4658
Date Published: 8/27/08
Considering all the recent advances in smoothtop ranges, we don't usually recommend you opt for a coil unit, but if you insist on going this route, Kenmore's Slide-In Range with Coils 4658 is one model you should seriously check out.
In spite of the fact that coils are considered old technology, the Kenmore 4658 incorporates some newer features not typically associated with this style range. An oven with a variable time self-cleaning feature is just one of these benefits. Instead of waiting for a full 4-hour cleaning session to complete, this feature allows you to get a lightly soiled oven back in service in about half the time. Another updated feature you might not expect to find on this range is a warm/hold feature. This setting allows you to warm prepared foods to serving temperature and automatically hold them there until serving time.
This Kenmore range differs somewhat from what is typically found on the showroom floor in that it offers a lift-up top that we don't see too often these days. Although this feature is becoming uncommon, it makes a lot of sense on a coil range. The top flips up to provide access to the large surface for easy cleaning.
For the features it offers, the Kenmore 4658 is a bit on the expensive side. It has an upward facing clock that may be difficult to see from a distance. But it is a good choice for those who desire to upgrade from an old electric range to an updated stainless steel design but still want to work with the familiar, conventional-style coil cooking elements.
Pros: Modern design, updated features, lift-up top
Cons: Relies on dated technology, upward facing clock can be hard to see from a distance
