Kenmore Microwave with Quick Touch Controls 66109

The Kenmore 0.7 cu. ft. Microwave Oven 66109 is designed for individuals with limited counter space. This compact countertop unit is about the size of a large toaster oven, measuring roughly 18 inches wide, 11 inches deep and 11 inches tall. Although it may be small, this oven has many of the features found on larger ovens, including nine quick-touch buttons, electronic touchpad controls, and auto and timed defrost options.
This model is styled entirely in black. Forgoing the popular trend toward pushbutton door release mechanisms, the Kenmore 66109 relies instead on a molded handle to pull the oven door open. We liked the design but noticed that the lightweight oven has a tendency to move as the door is pulled forward. It's a simple matter to compensate, either by holding the oven with your free hand or by simply pulling the door more quickly.
The controls on this model are every bit as convenient as higher-priced models. There are nine quick-touch buttons for common tasks (popcorn, potato, beverage, pizza, food plate, frozen entree, fresh vegetable, baked goods, casserole), which are preprogrammed with preferred power levels and approximate cook times. Although there is no sensor to help adjust the cooking time (and we would not expect to see one on a model priced so low), we were pleased with the performance of the one-touch functions. The only stipulation is that the programs must be used for their stated task only. The frozen entree button, for example, is designed specifically for a 10-ounce container. The popcorn button has two options: 3.0 and 3.5 ounces. We tried using the button with a 1.75-ounce mini bag of popcorn but ended up with some burnt pieces. The other buttons are much more flexible, allowing you to cook or reheat multiple servings.
The defrost capability of this model is extremely limited. The Auto Defrost function has three preprogrammed sequences for meat, poultry and fish. You can defrost foods weighing up to 6 pounds. There is also an Express Defrost button, which is designed exclusively for defrosting 1 pound of ground beef. The function worked quite well, and even provides audible beeps that signal once during the 2-minute cycle (to turn or break apart larger pieces) and again upon completion. Still, we were disappointed by the limitation of just one food choice. When you need to defrost something other than meat, poultry or fish (chicken stock, for example), you are left guessing.
For general heating and timed microwave function, this oven worked extremely well. It is by no means silent during operation, but we did not find it to be overly noisy either. All in all, it's a good microwave for the price. It is perfect for individuals living in a small condo, apartment or dorm room.
Pros: Compact, space-saving design, touchpad controls with nine one-touch buttons
Cons: Lightweight unit moves when door is opened, limited defrost function, limited interior space
