Fast and gentle drying characterize the most outstanding features of the Kenmore Elite Oasis 6.8-Cubic-Foot Dryer 67042 (electric) / 77042 (gas). Equipped with a sensor and plenty of cycles, this machine is one that won't shrink your clothing or cause the fabric damage we commonly see in machines that run for too long or get overly hot. The cycles for this unit are among the most accurate you will find on a dryer.

Although not the largest of the Oasis models, this dryer, with a 6.8-cubic-foot interior, is large enough to handle the output of its partner, the Elite Oasis washing machine. The 67042 / 77042 is one of two dryers in the Oasis series; it is the less expensive model. The features on both models are similar, but this one can be expected to be a bit noisier due to its different insulation and suspension system. If the dryer will be in a laundry room, out of earshot, then the noise shouldn't pose a problem. If you intend to place this dryer upstairs or in a living area of your home, you may want to consider the quieter and more expensive 7.5-cubic-foot Oasis model.

This Oasis model also has one less temperature setting and lacks the see-through glass door of the top-of-the-line model. Unless you have time to watch your laundry go round, we're at a loss as to how to justify spending extra for this feature. Five temperature settings instead of six may make more of a difference to you, especially if you require the most gentle of gentle cycles to care for your clothing. For most of us, however, even five heat settings are more than we're likely to normally use. As a rule of thumb, we recommend at least three settings on a dryer to ensure the versatility one should expect from a moderate- to high-priced clothes dryer -- so this less expensive model more than makes the cut.

The only reservation we have about this Kenmore dryer is that its controls, like all the sensor-equipped smart models of today, are more temperamental and may be prone to repair than the good old-fashioned and familiar dial controls. Making a selection amongst products today unfortunately requires often choosing between anticipated reliability and the most up-to-date technology.

By far, the best value of the Oasis 67042 / 77042 dryer is that it is large enough to dry the average family's wash loads. Only in special circumstances would we recommend spending more for a larger model. For variety, you may wish to look at Oasis products offered in spiffy colors. Sears sells upgraded models in black or blue, should you want a burst of color in the laundry room.

Kenmore's Elite Oasis Clothes Dryer 67042 / 77042 has plenty of capacity and offers gentle drying while costing less then its upgraded sibling.
