Kenmore Elite 36-Inch Cooktop 44183

Date Published: 4/30/07

Well-appointed and versatile, the Kenmore Elite 36-Inch Cooktop 44183 is currently one of our favorites in the electric cooktop category. Priced right, it has features that make cooking with electric a pleasurable experience.

Just right for a 36-inch cutout, this stainless-trimmed black glass cooktop is adaptable to a multitude of uses. It offers five elements or cooking zones. As an alternative, two of these elements can be controlled together, thanks to what is known as a bridge element. This bridge expands the heating surface, making it easier to get large pots of food to heat quickly and evenly -- a task that for many electric cooktops is a challenge.

A second, but not quite as unusual feature, is the dual element. This actually is an element within an element. To use it, simply choose the size that best matches the bottom of the pan you're using. Doing so will ensure best pan-to-heat contact and promote even cooking.

Ideal for today's larger kitchens, the 36-inch Kenmore Elite 44183 pairs well with an under-counter oven and a 36-inch over-the-range microwave. Simple to operate, this electric cooktop is controlled by rotary knobs, which are removable and dishwasher safe. Hot surface indicators lights ensure safe operation and warn you and your family when the elements are hot.

An excellent value, with unique features, in the increasingly popular 36-inch size, Kenmore's Elite 44183 gets a thumbs up from us.

Pros: Desirable bridge element, dual element
Cons: Requires a larger than average 40 amp, 240volt circuit
