Kenmore 40412 front-loading washer
Date Published: 8/6/08
Kenmore's 40412 front-loading washer may not be the biggest front-loader, but it offers many of the features shoppers are looking for in this type of product. And in comparison to more heavily advertised brands, the 40412 will save some shoppers a bit of money.
Scaled down, with an expected energy savings of 45 percent over a traditional top-loading washer, this model retains some of the best features of the high-efficiency models, yet is less expensive. Combine this energy efficiency with a 35 percent reduction in water consumption, an Extra Rinse setting and a high spin speed of 950 rpm, and it's easy to see what draws budget-minded people to this high-efficiency model.
Although equipped with many of the features driving the increased popularity of front-loaders, this model lacks the appeal of high-tech controls. Sophisticated controls may be enticing, but we see the lack of them can be a big benefit. Eliminating these components keeps down the price of the unit and usually lessens the need for repairs.
When it comes to standard cycles, this Kenmore model offers all the basics. Cycles for Normal, Heavy, Delicate, Permanent Press and Express Wash are all included. Some common step-up special features, however, are lacking. If you require a Delay Wash setting or would like the added convenience of a Pre-Soak cycle, this is not the model for you.
In its simplicity, the Kenmore 40412 sticks to the basic premise of the front-load style washing machine. It conserves water and energy, and is a budget-friendly choice. Although a bit on the smaller side, it is a greener and simpler machine.
Pros: Simple controls, energy and water efficient, budget priced
Cons: Lacks a Delay timer and a Pre-Soak function, relies on less expensive components
