Kenmore Elite 36-inch Over-the-Range Microwave Oven 63763

Date Published: 4/29/08

Kenmore's Elite 36-inch over-the-range microwave 63763 takes the best of all the 36-inch models we've seen and rolls everything into one superior microwave oven. On top of that, the price on Kenmore's offering is the best of the bunch.

This microwave oven offers convenient features you'll really use and eliminates the frivolous extras that cost more and fail to perform. We especially like the spacious 2.0-cubic-foot interior that's among the largest of any microwave oven on the market. You can fill this unit with food for a crowd and be guaranteed the speedy results you expect thanks to the high power rating of 1200 watts.

Not only big and fast, but easy to use, the 63763 has a sensor that handles microwavable staples such as vegetables, popcorn and baked potatoes. With plenty of one-touch options, the model makes these programmed foods easy to prepare

Additional handy features include settings for melting and softening foods such as butter, chocolate, frozen juice, cream cheese and ice cream. These tasks are excellent choices to include, as they are ideally suited to the capabilities of the microwave. Also on board this oven is the industry's relatively new simmer setting. The jury is still out on this new feature, but Kenmore has wisely used the sensor to power it.

Equipped with a hood, this model vents at any of five different speeds. The cooktop lighting, although not halogen, is bright enough to sufficiently light your cooking surface. Two light levels are offered.

The design of this over-the-range model is balanced, considering how wide it is. Plenty of little buttons on the front serve to give this oven an impressive air of authority. We also like the small, unobtrusive screen that is used for the display. If your plans include a 36-inch range or cooktop, topped with a microwave oven, Kenmore's 63763 is by far your best bet.

Pros: Offers features you'll really use, doesn't rely on gimmicks to entice buyers, priced appropriately
Cons: Uses less expensive standard lighting in place of brighter halogen
