Kenmore 13742 built-in dishwasher
Date Published: 4/25/08
We'll admit that dishwashers haven't seen many technological innovations in the last few years. Most use a similar method to clean dishes, but not all run quietly or offer the trendiest wash cycles or add-ons. The Kenmore 13742 dishwasher, which comes in white, black, bisque or stainless steel, is a relatively inexpensive model that does an admirable job. It's worth noting, however, that the stainless steel model costs about $100 more than the other versions.
This Kenmore dishwasher model has several things in common with its direct competitors that can cost as much as $400 more: It is Energy Star rated, it has adjustable tines and a roomy basket for flatware. We especially appreciate the adjustable and removable upper rack. This is an ideal feature for avid bakers who are tired of hand-scrubbing cookie sheets -- or for busy hosts who prefer to machine-wash large platters or bowls.
Unlike more expensive models, the Kenmore 13742 doesn't have a stainless steel tub insert, but for the average homeowner this probably won't make much difference. We do think some of the features the 13742 offers, however, are quite valuable. It has a built-in food disposal. This means that all those bits of food stuck on your dishware won't clog up the dishwasher's inner-workings anymore. While we wouldn't go as far as skipping the pre-dishwasher hand-rinse entirely, this model does allow us to let some food particles slip into the wash without concern. Instead, we'll rely on the Kenmore's spray jets to give dirty dishes the extra cleansing they require. Better still, we don't end up with spotty glasses.
Even with its convenient food disposal and higher-pressure rinse, this model isn't without flaw. It sometimes struggles to clean the most extreme baked-on or dried-on particles. Still, we like the Kenmore 13742 for its price, overall performance and variety of finishes.
It has several typical-for-its-class features, such as a delayed wash, high-temperature wash and quick wash. Those who are designing a custom kitchen will like the option of selecting an exterior panel to match kitchen cabinets. And because the Kenmore 13742 is well insulated, it runs with just a hum -- matching the quiet allure of pricier models. We don't often use the word luxury when talking about dishwashers, but if you want Mercedes performance at a Chevrolet price, the Kenmore 13742 is one to consider.
Pros: Cleans well, built-in food disposal, runs quietly
Cons: No stainless steel tub insert
