Kelty Convertible Backpack Carrier
Date Published: 8/6/07
The Kelty Convertible Backpack Carrier, weighing in at just 9 pounds, 3 ounces and sporting plenty of storage space, is worth a look. The fact that this lightweight backpack carrier converts to a stroller, however, may just put it at the top of your short list.
When used as a framed backpack carrier, the Convertible has ample storage space that, in some cases, can eliminate the need for an additional diaper bag. While we initially worried that the wheels of the stroller would become uncomfortable when the Kelty Convertible was used as a backpack carrier, our fears were soon allayed. The wheels can be adjusted to the wearer, allowing the backpack to stay comfortably attached for extended periods of time. The carrier doesn't come with a canopy, but a sunshade can be purchased separately.
We find it surprisingly quick and simple to convert the backpack carrier to a stroller. The stroller seat puts a baby in an upright position and sits higher than most other stroller seats. This vantage point can create interesting views for a baby, and it also has the unexpected convenience of doubling as a table-height booster chair. The stroller is a compact size, allowing it to easily fit through store aisles, navigate crowded sidewalks or go through doorways. The stroller has handles to assist in lifting it up steps or curbs. We would prefer that this model have a footrest, and we occasionally wished for larger wheels when we encountered rough surfaces. Given the backpack's versatility, however, this is ultimately a small price to pay.
We also find the Kelty Convertible Backpack Carrier folds compactly, which makes it ideal for travel. It doesn't take up much room in a vehicle's trunk, and during air travel it can be gate-checked, if allowed, thanks to its small size.
Pros: Use as backpack or stroller, generous storage, ideal for travel
Cons: Seat doesn't recline, no footrest
