K2 Bayside fun bike

Date Published: 5/10/05

The "comfort bike" category is a splinter from mountain bikes. It sports a more upright seating position (made possible by changing the frame design and handlebar stem orientation), and shock absorbing features everywhere they can be put.
The Bayside must win an award for shock absorbing features. The saddle has thick foam padding. And springs on the back. And a shock-absorbing telescoping sprung seat post. And the handgrips also have shock absorbing foam.
Even the pedals have comfort features. They are made from low-density urethane foam, so it feels like you're riding the bike with crepe soled shoes. But there's also some serious performance-enhancing features, such as the Noleen NS1 comfort tech suspension front fork with 55 mm of travel. Sure, this smooths out the bumps in the road. It also makes the bike more sure-footed and easy to handle on poor surfaces. The fork will make you more safe and secure on rough unpaved surfaces, bumps, and potholes. And the oversize aluminum-tube frame is a very capable performer, with metallurgy, rigidity, and strength on a par with far more expensive racing machines.
The Shimano Revo Shift twist grip shifters are easy for novices to master, and the bike has mounting eyelets so you can easily add front and rear racks. So a novice rider can find this bike an easy introduction to cycling; then add racks and use it for errands, commuting, or weekend tours.

Pros: Comfort features from the land of milk and honey; cute styling that recalls a newspaper delivery bike from 50 years ago; no-nonsense high-tech frame is far more serious than all that padding suggests.
Cons: Comfort bikes have some of the excitement bred out of them. Too much softness and padding can blunt your ambition to ride beyond the next county line.
