JVC PC-X290 boom box
Date Published: 1/7/08
The JVC PC-X290 is a fine example of the new style of boom boxes that look more like shelf systems. This makes sense, as the PC-X290 combines all the portability of a boom box with the features and sound usually found in a minisystem.
The PC-X290 has a single CD player that is compatible with CD-R/RW, although it won't play MP3 or WMA files. It also includes a dual cassette deck that interfaces with the CD player for synchro-start recording. In addition, there is a digital AM/FM tuner with presets for 10 AM and 10 FM stations. Although it only offers 5 watts per channel, the PC-X290 uses two-way speakers that detach from the main unit for a nice, wide stereo sound. Each speaker employs a 4-inch woofer and 2-inch tweeter in bass reflex cabinets.
The JVC PC-X290 has the features and styling of a minisystem, but it sports the aggressive sound and portability of a boom box. The result is very satisfying.
