JVC's LT-40X776 is a 40-inch LCD HDTV that combines high-resolution images and top performance with a very stylish design. The wide-format screen is surrounded by a black bezel, with a silver panel below the screen housing stereo speakers. A tilt stand lets this monitor sit atop a counter or table, or the stand can be removed to mount the LT-40X776 on a wall using separately available hardware.

The native resolution of 1,366X768 produces a crisp picture, with a 3-D Y/C digital comb filter present to eliminate rainbow effects and dot crawl. High-definition content is displayed at 720p. Edge correction and five-point color management circuitry create a picture that is lifelike and highly detailed. Film content can be viewed using 3:2 pulldown conversion, which reduces the uneven motion often found in action scenes. An ATSC tuner is built in, eliminating the need for an external HD tuner, and a CableCARD slot makes it possible to do without a cable box (a CableCARD is available from your cable provider). A memory card slot compatible with Memory Stick, SD, and CompactFlash cards allows digital photos and movies to be displayed directly on the big screen.

The LT-40X776 has a viewing angle of 170 degrees, so basically any seat in the house is a good one. The internal audio system includes twin oblique cone stereo speakers that are rated at 10 watts per channel. The audio can simulate surround sound, and it can boost bass tones as desired. Split-screen and other PIP options are available, but the LT-40X776's single tuner requires the addition of a second video source to enable PIP functionality.

Additional convenience features include five video modes, parental V-chip controls, a high-speed channel changer, adjustable sleep and on/off timers, a front-panel lock, and an automatic shut-off after 10 minutes of no signal. The side panel offers a range of connectivity options, with one set of component video inputs, two S-video inputs, three composite video inputs, an HDMI input, two FireWire ports, and an optical digital audio output. The included universal remote control has all illuminated buttons for easier nighttime use.
