JVC LT-37X688 37-inch LCD HDTV
Date Published: 10/29/07Not too long ago, 37-inches was the largest size TV available in the LCD format. If you wanted to make the jump to 42-inches (or greater), your only flat-panel option was plasma. Well, times have changed and there are LCD sets that are keeping pace with plasma, but despite this, the 37-inch size is still popular for those looking for a set that is large yet not big. The irony is that a mere two decades ago, a 37-inch would seem overwhelming, but today the JVC LT-37X688 is a set that will fit well in a smaller space such as den or bedroom. And unless you need the full cinematic experience, this model will work well in the living room too and it won't break the bank.
It is wall-mountable of course, and very stylish with a sleek black cabinet. The 688 series is a simple black, which isn't quite as nice as the higher performance step-up 788 series that features a bit of silver trim along with an ultra-thin bezel. But at 37-inches, the LT-37X688 is small and stylish enough that it won't detract from the room's décor.
This 1080p set features full HD resolution of 1920x1080 and uses JVC's fifth generation D.I.S.T. (Digital Image Scaling Technology) to provide a crisp and clear picture. This series of sets also features the latest JVC Genessa chip, which is a 32-bit CPU processor that combines all image processing, noise reduction and color management technologies into a single chip for better performance. This is noticeable in that dark areas on the screen aren't so muddy or degraded. The LT-37X688 offers nine aspect ratio modes, so you can zoom in to accommodate a variety of video sources and video formatting. There are four picture modes as well, so you can adjust for movies, games or TV, and adjustments can be saved by the various inputs.
The LT-37X688 boasts numerous A/V connections located in the rear of the set including twin HDMI inputs, along with two HD component video inputs, and three composite A/V inputs with a single S-Video. The set features analog stereo output as well as digital optical audio output. We can't complain about the lack of side inputs as this is a 37-inch set and is small enough that it really doesn't warrant it. On the plus side we liked the USB input for the viewing of digital photos. This model even includes some advanced viewing options of the photos, including the ability to zoom and rotate images, while also offering the ability to set a slide show.
The twin speakers do a very good job with movies and TV, and this set includes JVC's Advanced Hyper Surround Sound to simulate a multi-speaker set up. While even a budget home theater in a box system would complement this 37-inch set, it really isn't necessary. Additionally, the JVC Smart Sound feature helps maintain a constant volume during content changes, such as when there is a commercial break. This is a very nice feature if you're watching in a bedroom and don't want to disturb the rest of the house. All in all this is a great set, whether for primary viewing or just to get HDTV to a second room.
Pros: Good value for the money, decent sound from the speakers
Cons: A third HDMI input would be welcomed as would side inputs
