JVC HD-61Z886 61-inch HD-ILA HDTV

Date Published: 10/26/07

JVC's HD-61Z886 is a 61-inch widescreen HDTV that is slim and light enough to fit on a countertop, and it delivers stunning high-definition images in crisp, lifelike detail.

The flat screen is bordered in dark gray, with speakers contained in the silver panel below the screen and a compact gray base supporting all. Control buttons and audio/video/S-video inputs are conveniently located along the side, where they are out of sight but still easily accessible. The integrated HD tuner can receive over-the-air HDTV without the need for an additional set-top box, and a CableCARD slot is present so cable users can skip the cable box as well.

JVC's HD-ILA technology uses liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) projection. The screen resolution is 1,280X720, with all images presented at 720p. A 4MB 10-bit 3-D Y/C digital comb filter keeps dot crawl and hanging dots to a minimum, and digital video noise reduction further improves the picture. A five-point color management system provides lifelike hues, with rich blacks and bright whites.

Picture-in-picture requires a second tuner for full functionality, but with the addition of a VCR or other source, it is possible to watch two programs in a split-screen configuration, freeze the action to the other half of the screen, or create a video index to preview 12 channels at once.

The internal audio system includes twin stereo speakers producing a total of 20 watts of audio output, which can be configured for simulated surround sound or set up to optimize dialogue or music. Volume can be automatically maintained at a steady level to eliminate the blare of commercials.

Other convenience features include seven picture formats, five video settings, a signal strength indicator for tuning in analog or digital channels, favorite channel memory for up to 24 channels, and channel and video input labeling.

In addition to the side inputs, the HD-61Z886's rear panel has a generous array of input options, with an RF input, three audio/video inputs, two S-video inputs, two HD component video inputs, one HDMI interface, two FireWire inputs, a center channel speaker input, and an audio/video output. The universal remote control has fully illuminated buttons that are easy to use in the dark.

The JVC HD-61Z886 uses its LCoS technology to present smooth images without visible pixels, operating quietly and without the need for convergence adjustments that trouble rear-projection CRT.
