JVC HD-61G787 61-inch HD-ILA HDTV
Date Published: 10/26/07
The HD-61G787 is a 61-inch HDTV that maintains a slim profile thanks to JVC's HD-ILA technology, a variation of LCoS (liquid crystal on silicon). The all-black monitor is compact for such a large screen, and it keeps its footprint relatively small by placing the built-in stereo speakers below the screen.
The integrated ATSC/NTSC/QAM tuners deliver a detailed image on the 1,280X720 native-resolution screen, and all input signals are displayed at 720p. Three of JVC's ILA microchips combine to produce the picture, which is assisted by a 3-D Y/C digital comb filter equipped with JVC's cross-color elimination function. The colors are realistic, but black levels are not as good as those produced by other rear-projection technologies. Because it uses LCoS technology rather than traditional CRT rear-projection, convergence issues and image burn-in are not problems on the HD-61G787.
The internal audio system consists of stereo speakers producing 10 watts of output per channel, and the HD-61G787 includes adjustments for balance, bass and treble, as well as a digital bass enhancement function that produces a solid low end. An equalizer adds to the accuracy of the audio, and you can engage simulated surround sound for a pseudo-3-D experience. Convenience features include a world clock, multiple timers and channel and input labeling.
The HD-61G787 has an RF input, two HD component video inputs, two HDMI inputs and two IEEE 1394 inputs, all of which can handle high-quality digital content with ease. Four composite video inputs (one on the front panel) and two S-video inputs complete the input selection. The HD-61G787's universal remote control is intelligently designed, with fully illuminating buttons for hassle-free use in the dark.
This HDTV looks good, but it lacks the bang-for-the-buck of some competing big-screen models. Nevertheless, the JVC HD-61G787 is a competent performer in a compact cabinet.
