JVC HD-61FN97 61-Inch 1,080p HD-ILA HDTV

Date Published: 4/28/08

The HD-61FN97 utilizes JVC's proprietary HD-ILA technology (a variation of LCoS) to produce a sharp 61-inch HD picture in an attractive cabinet. Unlike DLP sets that employ pixel-doubling "wobulation" to achieve 1,080p, three HD-ILA chips give the HD-61FN97 a true 1,080p native resolution.

As you would expect from a top-resolution HDTV like the HD-61FN97, images are incredibly sharp, and JVC's Digital Image Scaling Technology (DIST) converts all incoming signals to 1,080p. An adjustable optical iris system lets you increase or decrease the brightness of the display, and digital noise reduction prevents artifacts from marring the picture. When watching movies, 3:2 pulldown keeps the motion smooth.

While images are sharp and clear, the HD-61FN97's color performance is not quite up to par. Each HD-ILA chip is dedicated to one color (red, blue and green). However, the colors are not as accurate as can be found on a number of LCoS and DLP sets, although JVC offers a number of color adjustment and management functions. If you are spending this much on a big-screen TV, you might consider having it professionally calibrated for the best results. On the other hand, the HD-61FN97 has excellent black levels, doing a great job rendering detail in shadows.

The integrated ATSC tuner decodes high-definition signals delivered by cable or antenna, and the HD-61FN97 has a QAM tuner and CableCARD slot for full digital cable readiness. There are multiple PIP/POP functions, but like a majority of televisions in this category, a second video source is needed to enable them. JVC includes a universal remote control, and while it is illuminated for use in the dark, the crowded and confusing layout may leave you searching for the correct button. Thankfully, the straightforward onscreen menu system makes navigation relatively simple.

Stereo speakers are located under the HD-61FN97's screen, which helps to reduce the overall footprint. The audio system is functional but not very impressive, producing 20 watts of total output. Audio options include a bass boost, dialogue enhancement and simulated surround sound.

The HD-61FN97 packs in the convenience features, with four picture modes for standard content, three modes for HD content, five picture presets including JVC's TheaterPro6500K and one for games, a favorite channel memory and a front-panel lock. You can label both channels and inputs, and there are multiple timers for turning on or shutting off the TV.

The jack pack is extensive. It includes an RF input, four composite video inputs (one on the side panel), two S-video inputs, two HD component video inputs, two 1,080p-compatible HDMI inputs, two IEEE 1394 connectors, a PC input, a center channel input for making the HD-61FN97 the center speaker in a home theater system, a fixed/variable audio output and a digital audio output.

While it has its drawbacks, the JVC HD-61FN97 nevertheless offers a crisp 1,080p picture with useful features and a fine connection selection.

Pros: Sharp 1,080p picture, good connectivity, digital cable-ready
Cons: Color accuracy, ho-hum audio system, poorly designed remote
