With its HA-NC80, JVC proves that effective noise-canceling headphones can also be affordable.

By combining two noise-reduction techniques, JVC claims the HA-NC80 headphones cut external noise by up to 75 percent. The headphones start with closed earcups that physically block ambient sound from reaching your ears. The cushioned earcups are quite comfortable, so you won't have to worry about sore earlobes. The padded headband also makes wearing these phones a pleasant experience.

The HA-NC80 headphones employ phase-canceling technology that samples outside noises and actively eliminates them. There are two active-cancellation settings, labeled "wide" and "low." Wide addresses a broad range of frequencies and is ideal for airplane engine noise, while low is best for lower-frequency noise sources such as buses and trains. You can also turn off the noise reduction circuitry and use the HA-NC80's as regular headphones.

Whether the noise cancellation is on or off, the HA-NC80 headphones deliver a respectable if unremarkable sound. Each earphone has a 30mm neodymium driver, producing a frequency response of 10Hz to 22,000Hz, although as you would expect from headphones, the bass lacks some oomph. The sensitivity is 103dB with the active noise reduction on or 105dB with it off.

These headphones have a 4-9/10-foot cable, and the jack is plated in gold to ensure a strong, clean connection. The noise-reduction circuitry uses a single AAA battery (included), which lasts for approximately 50 hours of operation. The HA-NC80 headphones fold up when not in use, and they come with a handy protective case.

With effective noise cancellation and a decent sound, the JVC HA-NC80 headphones are a good alternative to much pricier competitors.
