JVC GR-SXM38 VHS-C Camcorder

Date Published: 10/30/08

While the JVC GR-SXM38 VHS-C camcorder has the same compact body of the less-expensive GR-AXM18, it also offers an improved feature set and some additional recording options. As well as standard VHS, the GR-SXM38 can capture your home movies to Super VHS (S-VHS) and Super VHS ET (S-VHS ET). S-VHS offers improved resolution, S-VHS ET mode offers both quality and economy since it can be used with any VHS-C tape and standard VHS is compatible with any home VCR.

This camcorder features an integrated video light for improved picture quality in low-light situations. The unit boasts a 2-1/2-inch color LCD display and a relatively large 25X optical/1,000X digital zoom capability, as well as an array of digital effects. It also has digital image stabilization, but it cannot capture digital stills. Since this unit retails for a mere $30 more than the GR-AXM18, we'd opt for the GR-SXM38 as the better-value VHS camcorder.

Pros:  Effective zoom, S-VHS and S-VHS ET recording, video light
Cons:  Limited by the VHS format

Warranty
90 days labor, 1 year parts
