JVC GR-AXM18 VHS-C Camcorder
Date Published: 4/22/08
JVC's GR-AXM18 is about as basic as camcorders get, but it still has some surprises up its sleeve. While the quality of VHS has long been surpassed by DV camcorders, units like the GR-AXM18 offer a number of advantages, not the least of which is the inexpensive price. With an MSRP of just $200, the GR-AXM18 represents one of the cheapest ways to record home videos, especially if you like to share tapes with family members who still prefer the tried and trusted VHS format.
The GR-AXM18 is a compact, well-constructed unit with all the basic features you need in an entry-level VHS camcorder. The 2-1/2-inch color LCD provides clear images for framing your shots, and it rotates for those awkward high or low angles. The 20X optical/800X digital zoom works smoothly, and this camcorder offers plenty of digital effects and scene transitions for adding a spark to your home movies. There is even digital image stabilization to keep your shots steady.
Keep in mind that the GR-AXM18 lacks stills capability, so if you want an inexpensive camcorder that can also take still pictures, keep looking. Nevertheless, for an ultra-basic VHS-C camcorder that will capture simple video (but little else), the GR-AXM18 may be the one for you.
Pros: Inexpensive, effective optical zoom, convenient for playing back on a VCR
Cons: Basic even for a VHS camcorder
