The JVC FS-Y1 has some features that aren't usually found on an executive desktop system. The FS-Y1 is not only a CD stereo minisystem, but it can also play DVD-Audio and DVD-Video. When connected to a television monitor, it even provides on-screen menus. Those with digital televisions can take advantage of system's progressive scan output.

In addition to a number of DVD formats, the FS-Y1 can play SVCD, VCD, CD-R/RW and MP3 files stored on disc. CD playback modes include random, repeat, and 99-track program play. The system has integrated decoding for two-channel Dolby Digital and DTS, and the optical digital output can be used to connect to an external decoder or full-featured A/V receiver. The FS-Y1 uses 192 kHz/24-bit processing.

The FS-Y1 provides 36 watts (peak) of amplification power. The full-range speakers are adequate, and the sound can be enhanced with bass and treble controls. While this might be considered an executive system, it would be equally at home in the bedroom with its sleep timer, three preset timers and a wake-up volume control. With a system like the FS-Y1, waking up wouldn't be quite so difficult.
