JVC Everio GZ-MG77 hard-disk camcorder

Date Published: 2/25/08

It is difficult to label any current hard-disk camcorder as budget-friendly, but the JVC Everio GZ-MG77 proves to be a better value for the money than most similar models.

The GZ-MG77 is an updated version of the GZ-MG70. Surprisingly, the newer model offers a slightly smaller image sensor than its predecessor, although the GZ-MG77's 1/3.9-inch CCD produces a higher pixel count. The resulting images show an improvement in overall quality, especially regarding brightness and color saturation. There is a noticeable lack of detail in some shadowy areas, although this model comes equipped with a brighter F1.2 lens that assists when shooting in low-light conditions.

All Everio camcorders record MPEG2 video to an internal hard drive. The GZ-MG77's drive has a whopping 30GB of capacity, which is enough to store 7 hours of video in Ultra Fine mode or an amazing 37 hours in Economy mode. No matter how much overtime is added to your kid's soccer game, you'll never miss a kick. Just as important, your hand won't get tired holding the GZ-MG77, as it is extremely compact and lightweight.

The GZ-MG77 offers the same 2-7/10-inch widescreen LCD monitor and improved joystick menu navigation system featured on the lower-end GZ-MG37. The GZ-MG77 has a smaller optical zoom capability, however, with a 10X optical/300X digital zoom. This is supported by an effective digital image stabilization system.

Digital stills are captured at 2.2-megapixel resolution and can be stored on the hard drive or an SD memory card, and the GZ-MG77 has a built-in flash for photography. One optional extra is a handy DVD share station that connects to this model via a USB 2.0 port to instantly create DVD of your home recordings.

With a $900 price tag, the GZ-MG77 is not cheap, but in the world of hard-disk digital camcorders, the improved video quality and handling make it a good buy.

Pros:  Huge storage capacity, ultra-portable design, optional DVD share station makes it easy to copy recordings to disc
Cons:  Overall video quality still inferior to many comparable MiniDV models, smaller optical zoom than the cheaper Everio GZ-MG37

JVC Everio GZ-MG77 (30 GB) Hard Drive Camcorder
JVC's HDD based Everio line has always been promising, but everyone is pining for more room for video, especially in a camera with no way to swap in more media when you're running out of space. JVC is giving up the good stuff with its 30GB MG77 camera. The top of the line MG77 rocks a 2.3 megapixel ...
