The entry-level JVC Everio GZ-MG27 hard-disk camcorder has much in common with its predecessor, last year's GZ-MG21. Essentially, the GZ-MG27 adds a widescreen recording mode along with a 2-7/10-inch wide-format color LCD monitor for accurate framing of your shots. For the inclusion of these features, you can expect to pay an extra $100. That may sound like a hefty increase, but as with any hard-disk camcorder, it's always worth factoring the savings you'll make over the life of the camcorder by never having to purchase MiniDV tapes or 3-inch discs again.

Like the other Everio models, the GZ-MG27 is extremely compact and lightweight. It will comfortably slip into a purse or jacket pocket, so you can carry it with you just about anywhere. However, if you have large hands, you may grow frustrated with some of the tiny controls on the GZ-MG27. The zoom control is particularly small and awkward, as are the recessed menu buttons. Such handling concerns are always subjective, of course, so we recommend you try the GZ-MG27 to make sure it suits you.

We can be far more objective about other features of the GZ-MG27. This camcorder records video directly to its 20GB internal hard disk, which translates to 25 hours of recordings at the lowest quality setting or 4.5 hours at the highest setting. Given the video quality, however, we strongly recommend sticking to the highest setting. While the GZ-MG27 captures average-quality video in ideal lighting, it struggles mightily in low light, producing jagged edges and washed-out colors. In addition, the auto-focus performs poorly without a good deal of light. The GZ-MG27 does include a built-in video lamp to boost low-light performance, but the lamp's effective range is very limited.

We are also disappointed by the GZ-MG27's battery life. Considering the relatively large storage capacity, we don't think it's unreasonable to expect the battery to deliver a lot more than 1 hour of shooting time between charges. While you may not have to tote extra MiniDV tapes or blank DVD, you may want to consider carrying an extra battery pack.

The optical setup includes a 680,000-pixel CCD and 32X optical/800X digital zoom lens. Since there are almost no moving parts in the GZ-MG27, there is no motor noise to be picked up during recordings. Digital stills can be captured to either the hard disk or SD memory card, but they are really only suitable for posting online. Connecting the unit to the included Everio Share Station lets you burn saved video directly to DVD via your computer.

JVC's GZ-MG27 hard-disk camcorder packs plenty of features into its compact frame, but it is ultimately let down by poor video quality.
