JVC Everio GZ-HD7 Hard-Disk HD Camcorder

Date Published: 5/3/07

The Everio GZ-HD7 represents a series of firsts for JVC. This is the first consumer camcorder to record in full 1,080i HD resolution, and it is also the first high-definition Everio camcorder to record directly to a hard disk. In addition, this is JVC's first consumer model to feature a third-party lens. The broadcast-caliber Fujinon lens with 10X optical zoom is normally found only on JVC's professional cameras, which should give you a good idea of the video quality you can expect from this HD camcorder.

The GZ-HD7 employs a trio of 1/5-inch CCD for improved color reproduction to match the high-resolution images. To complement the optical setup, JVC includes a superior optical image stabilization system that eradicates camera shakes during handheld shooting, and it does this without degrading the video quality like digital image stabilization can. The built-in 60GB hard drive stores up to five hours of video recordings at the maximum 1,920X1,080i resolution, and it stretches to seven hours in the 1,440X1,080i mode. The GZ-HD7 also offers an SD memory card slot for saving digital stills.

While the GZ-HD7 maintains the convenience and easy operation we've come to expect from the Everio series, it is capable of delivering breathtaking video images. In addition to the usual automatic controls for point-and-shoot enthusiasts, the GZ-HD7 offers a comprehensive array of manual controls, including a focus ring and white balance and exposure controls. Alternately, you can select aperture or shutter priority modes. The 2-4/5-inch LCD is large enough for accurate framing and focusing, but to assist with the increased difficulty of obtaining accurate manual focus with a HD camcorder, the GZ-HD7 offers an invaluable focus assist feature. This cleverly displays in-focus areas of the frame in color while switching the out-of-focus areas to black and white.

We were also impressed by the editing and archiving solutions available for this HD camcorder. The optional Everio Share Station enables you to conveniently archive video to DVD-R/RW. It also operates as a PC-less storage solution and a playback device. The Cyberlink BD Solution software included with the GZ-HD7 lets you to edit HD video on your PC and author Blu-ray high-definition discs (provided your computer is properly equipped, of course).

The GZ-HD7 is noticeably larger than JVC's standard-definition Everio hard-disk models, but the increased size and weight is a worthwhile compromise considering the performance and optical setup of this HD camcorder.

Pros:  High-quality lens and optical setup, three-CCD imager, good manual controls including a manual focus ring, optical image stabilization, solid editing bundle
Cons:  Larger and heavier than standard-definition Everio models

1 year parts and labor
