JVC AV-32F577 32-inch TV with digital tuner
Date Published: 4/23/08
With its AV-32F577, JVC joins a growing trend among manufacturers by placing a digital (ATSC) tuner in a traditional standard-definition TV. In anticipation of the FCC-mandated February 2009 switch from analog to all-digital broadcasting, the digital tuner "future-proofs" the AV-32F577, enabling you to watch analog and digital signals without the need for any additional tuner boxes.
Keep in mind that the integrated ATSC tuner will display digital broadcasts, but it is not an HD tuner. Instead, the AV-32F577 displays standard-definition digital signals (and traditional analog signals) at 480i. There is also a QAM tuner for digital cable readiness, but you should check with your cable provider for QAM compatibility.
The AV-32F577 produces a respectable picture, although edges are considerably sharper with digital input signals. A 3-D Y/C digital comb filter and velocity scan modulation help to enhance on-screen content. The side-mounted stereo speakers produce a meager 5 watts of audio output per channel, and the AV-32F577 has automatic volume leveling and simulated surround sound. Convenience features of note include an electronic program guide, a multifunction timer and channel and input labeling.
The input and output selection on the AV-32F577 is rather modest. In addition to a front-panel composite video input, the rear panel offers two RF inputs (one digital and one analog), two more composite video inputs, an S-video input, a single component video input and a fixed audio output. The included remote control has dedicated buttons for a DVD player, and it provides direct access to the different video inputs.
The JVC AV-32F577 is a relatively basic but perfectly functional 32-inch TV, and with its digital tuner, you will be prepared for the upcoming switch to digital broadcasting.
