John Deere X500 48-inch-deck garden tractor
Date Published: 4/2/08
The John Deere X500 is the top of the line in garden tractors. The large 48-inch deck allows for a fast, precise cut, and the 25-hp Kawasaki engine gives it the right amount of power to ensure that the job gets done quickly. The deck allows for a few different operating modes, including side discharge, mulching and material collection. The 48-inch front blade can be raised and lowered to cut in .25-inch increments from 1 to 4 inches in height. We find that it is simple to adjust the blade height by using the deck-leveling gauge, and if you want to adjust the mower deck, the spring-assisted foot lift system is easy to use. This is a great riding mower for a large, challenging yard since it maneuvers nicely on hills and around landscaping.
The X500's large 5-gallon fuel tank is another aspect of this machine's construction that makes it ideal for users with expansive mowing needs. This tank has a 3-inch fill opening, so refueling is a clean process. The easy-to-read, dash-mounted fuel gauge helps you to make sure that you always have enough gas to finish the job.
The steering of the X500 is smooth and offers a 22-inch turning radius. Though the turning radius may be a bit larger than those that you'll find on smaller decks, we find it to be quite tight. Sure, it can't make hairpin turns, but its maneuverability is otherwise incredible. We love the two-touch automatic transmission; it allows you to make smooth changes in speed and direction.
The X500 is extremely comfortable. The seat is high in the back and has springs to soften bumps. Add in the cup holder and mowing the lawn feels a little less like a chore.
We find that while its price may be steep, this user-friendly riding mower is worth the money if you have a large lawn.
Pros: Large deck, user-friendly, high quality, sturdy, comfortable
Cons: Price
