John Deere LA110 lawn tractor
Date Published: 4/19/07
The John Deere line of lawn tractors has recently gone through a reorganization, retiring their venerable model 125 and others in favor of a new 100 series. New models include the LA100, LA110, LA120, LA130, LA140, and LA150. Representative of the series is the LA110, reviewed here.
The John Deere LA110 is powered by a 19.5-hp Briggs & Stratton single-cylinder OHV engine that's made exclusively for John Deere. It has a full-pressure lube system with oil filter for longer life than some two-cycle engines. Transmission is a hydrostatic (automatic) that's easy to operate. Top forward speed is 5-1/2 mph and reverse speed goes up to 3-1/4 mph. The LA110 cuts a 42-inch-wide path and has two anti-scalp rollers on the mower deck (some models have four anti-scalp rollers). Mowing height is adjustable from 1 to 4 inches in 1/4-inch increments. As with many other lawn tractors, the turning radius for this model is 18 inches.
The one-piece frame is made of 12-gauge steel, which is a little thinner than some models but it is beefed up with two heavier steel rails. The front axle is cast iron, which is more solid than a steel axle. The metal is finished with powder-coated paint, and the engine hood is heavy-duty plastic with side vents. The LA110 should last many years, especially if kept in a garage or storage shed.
There's no front bumper on this model, but it is available as an option. Other options include a 6.5-bushel rear-bagger with a chute that runs from the side discharge. There's also a mulch-kit option. You can add an optional 44-inch snow blower, a 46-inch snow blade and a sun canopy. Cruise control, standard on some larger Deere models, is an option on the LA110.
The manufacturer's warranty is adequate. However, be aware that if you buy it at The Home Depot or Lowe's and do not fill out a warranty registration card at the time of purchase, you must register it with John Deere (mail-in card or online) to activate the warranty. Other authorized dealers take care of the paperwork for you. Also, be aware that the warranty is regional; it doesn't apply to the unit if the mower is moved out of the service region in which it was first sold.
There's nothing fancy on the LA110 model. If you don't really need fancy features, and the low price is important to you, the LA110 can be a relatively good value for you. It's best for lawns up to about 1-1/2 acres. Just make sure you carefully read the warranty.
Pros: Adequate engine and transmission, convenient controls
Cons: Must register for warranty if bought from The Home Depot or Lowe's
