Jenn-Air Downdraft Range JES9860BA
Date Published: 12/6/07
The Jenn-Air JES9860BA slide-in, downdraft electric range is the perfect solution for those who want an open, airy kitchen unencumbered by a ventilation fan. It's also our range of choice for anyone who has always wanted the convenience of an indoor grill.
A bit different than a typical slide-in range, this model comes equipped with a grill in the left bay and an open bay on the right. To complete the range, you will need to purchase a set of either coil or smoothtop radiant elements. Plan on spending an additional $200-$349 to get these two required elements.
On top of that, you may wish to add the convenient pancake griddle or the wok. Selecting one of these accessories will add an additional $150 or so to the price. Many buyers also purchase an additional module of elements to have on hand to make this model a four-burner range. Doing so will add to the overall cost once again. In short, if you're considering this range, be prepared to spend anywhere from $200 to $1000 or more than the quoted price to get it equipped the way you want.
Once you have the JES9860BA in your home, you'll find it quite versatile. With its selection of accessories, you'll finally have one tool that takes the place of multiple appliances. The indoor grill performs quite well for everything from burgers to chicken and fish. You don't get that smoky outdoor taste, but you do eliminate your exposure to harmful carcinogens.
The biggest challenge of a Jenn-Air grill has long been cleaning it. In answer to that, the manufacturer has added a non-stick finish to the grates. We still find it inconvenient to degrease the bay and re-assemble the unit after use, but the grates are certainly much improved. They can be popped directly into the dishwasher for a thorough cleaning.
Jenn-Air's ovens have long been known as some of the best in the industry. Fortunately that hasn't changed. The JES9860BA offers Jenn-Air's excellent convection system with bread proofing and food-drying settings. Its spacious cavity measures 4.3 cubic feet and comes equipped with three racks. Automatic convection conversion is standard and the new, bright halogen lights can't be beat.
For those who don't want an overhead fan, the two-speed ventilation system does a sufficient job of venting the unit for both stove-top and grill cooking. Be forewarned however, that you will need a way to vent this system. Venting in the floor, through a cabinet or directly outdoors are all options. Be sure to discuss your venting plan before purchasing this range to ensure it will work properly in your kitchen.
A versatile model, the Jenn-Air JES9860BA can cost quite a bit more to get it fully equipped and properly installed. Be sure to get all the details on Jenn-Air's unique slide-in range, so you're not faced with any expensive surprises.
