Janome Sewist 509 sewing machine

Date Published: 4/26/07

Don't assume all sewing machines are the same and that the cheapest one will do the job. Avoid this recipe for disaster and instead consider the affordable Janome Sewist 509. Although affordable, this machine is well made and can eliminate much of the frustration that comes with working on a poorly constructed sewing machine.

The features on this model may be limited, but on an entry-level machine, sophisticated features or lots of stitches should not be your first priority. Your first priority should be a well-built machine that will ensure success and build an interest in sewing. This is exactly what you can expect from the Sewist 509.

This model weighs 17. 5 pounds and is light enough to carry to sewing classes. It offers nine stitches, which is all the utility stitches you need to get started. The number of adjustments is very limited, but for beginners that can be a good thing. With fewer adjustments, a new seamstress is less likely to get into the trouble caused by over-adjusting.

Equipped with a top-load bobbin, the Sewist 509 makes it fairly simple to get started. The machine is easy to operate and sews smoothly. The features are sufficient for home decorating projects, garment sewing and crafts. The most complicated feature is the four-step buttonhole, which can be tricky for a beginner and is likely to be the technique that lets you know when you're ready to trade up to a more expensive model.

The Janome Sewist 509 is the perfect sewing machine for those looking to start sewing while keeping costs down. It's affordable, yet well built, and it's a big step up from a cheapie no-name brand in a non-descript box.

Pro: Well-built, drop-in bobbin, appropriate for the most beginner of beginners
Con: Lacks adjustments and easy one-step buttonhole feature
