Infinity Reference 7540a car audio amplifier
Date Published: 1/9/08
The Infinity Reference 7540a is an ideal amplifier for many installs. Most cars have a head unit with a four-channel output, along with four speakers, so why not use an amplifier with four channels? Fitting the bill is the 7540a, with 111 watts into four channels at 4 ohms.
Why the odd power rating? The 7540a has a CEA 2006-compliant rating, so this number is the exact amount of power that is produced--not an overinflated peak measurement.
The amplifier can be configured for full-range or subwoofer speakers, and the four channels can be bridged down to two, offering 278 watts into two channels at 4 ohms. It can even be configured for three-channel operation, making it ideal for the front/center/ right speakers necessary in a mobile theater.
To adjust for a user's specific needs, the 7540a has variable high- and low-pass filters ranging from 32Hz to 320Hz, with a slope of 12dB/octave. Whether in full-range or subwoofer applications, there is a variable bass boost at 50Hz, adjustable up to 12dB.
There are preamp outputs to connect other amplifiers, and there are also preamp and speaker-level inputs in case the head unit does not have preamp outputs. The MOSFET power supply provides a clean, strong signal that runs cool even at loud levels.
The Infinity Reference 7540a might be all that is needed to bring a car audio system up to a new level of enjoyment.
