iGadget All-in-One Multifunction FM Radio IGS-023

Date Published: 12/10/07

The iGadget All-in-One Multifunction FM Radio IGS-023 is an ultra-handy, seven-in-one tool that proves invaluable on a hike, bike ride, campout or boating expedition. In addition to the obvious FM radio, the IGS-023 includes a magnetic floating compass, a temperature gauge, an alert whistle and a red LED light, among other items. You'll keep finding new uses for this versatile tool.

The IGS-023 is about 5 inches long and 2 inches wide, and it includes a 34-inch braided cord so it can be worn around your neck. The entire device weighs less than 2 ounces, which is amazing considering all the components built in. The unit operates on a pair of 3V lithium batteries, which are included.

The compass and temperature gauge are on one side of the IGS-023, and the FM scan button, volume control and light switch are on the other. The top of the unit is home to the whistle, which sounds a high-pitched alert of varying strengths depending on how hard you blow through it. Unscrewing the whistle reveals a 1-inch magnifying glass and a mirror.

The IGS-023 comes with a set of earbuds, and the radio turns on when the earbuds are plugged in. There is no power switch. To turn the radio off, you must unplug the earbuds, and failing to do so leads to drained batteries.

The FM radio signal is amazingly clear, and we were able to tune in about a dozen stations during our tests. Pushing the FM scan button shifts from one available station to the next, and a reset button returns you to the beginning of the scan. The buttons are touch-sensitive, so if you are jogging, you'll want to secure the IGS-023 so the buttons don't get accidentally bumped.

Though it feels a bit gimmicky, the IGS-023's various features are generally useful, but they have their limitations. For example, the red light is only effective at very short distances. The compass and the thermometer are accurate, but their small size can make them difficult to read.

Available online at www.ekitchengadgets.com, this gadget proves to be handy in a number of situations. With its seven distinct functions, the iGadget All-in-One Multifunction FM Radio IGS-023 is an odd yet versatile tool.

Pros: Compact gadget with seven built-in functions, FM radio with earbuds
Cons: Flashlight ineffective at anything but close range, compass and thermometer hard to read, lack of on/off switch can easily lead to dead batteries
