Husqvarna Z4824 Zero-Turn Riding Mower
Date Published: 11/21/08
The Husqvarna Z4824 is a new model at the lower price range with features of mid-range zero-turn riders, and it's a Best Buy.
There's really nothing fancy about the Z4824, but for most folks that's okay. It has a powerful 24-hp engine, dual hydrostatic transmission, a wide 48-inch cut, and a relatively comfortable seat. And the price is competitive with models without some of these features.
Start with the engine -- that's what drives things. The 24-hp Briggs & Stratton Extended Life V-Twin OHC engine is one of Briggs & Stratton's best engines and the horsepower is more than adequate for cutting larger lawns. The engine has two cylinders rather than one so it runs smoother with less vibration. It has full-pressure lubrication and easy-to-replace air, oil, and fuel filters. Top forward speed is 6 mph and the reverse speed goes up to 3-1/2 mph. It moves.
The dual hydrostatic transmission is maintenance-free and easy to operate through the two control levels. As advertised, it can turn in its own tracks to reduced wasted cutting time.
The 48-inch cut also reduces cutting time by trimming as much as 50 percent more grass than smaller zero-turn riders. It's designed for lawns up to about 2 acres (80,000 square feet) but can do more if called upon. Most of the controls are at your right hand, except the cutting height, which is operated by a foot pedal on the right side. The cutting height ranges from 1-1/2 to 4 inches. With three cutting blades and four anti-scalp rollers, the job moves quickly.
The heavy-duty frame is made from a single piece of stamped steel and powder-coated to minimize rust. The adjustable seat is relatively comfortable with a half-height back, two arm rests and a cup holder nearby. If you prefer to cut your lawn when the sun isn't as illuminating, you'll appreciate the headlights that come standard. One more feature we like is the utility box mounted on the otherwise unused space behind the seat. Use it for picked-up debris, tools, or whatever. If it isn't big enough, attach an optional yard cart on the rear and pull it along -- just remember that it's back there when you decide to make a zero-radius turn!
As with most mowers, side discharge is standard; a side-to-rear bagger or mulching kit are optional.
Overall, we really like the Husqvarna Z4824 zero-turn rider. It's not made for commercial use, but it fits the bill for many homeowners who want a fast, nimble, wide-cut mower that will last many years. We think it's a Best Buy.
