Husqvarna YTH2146XP lawn tractor
Date Published: 4/16/07
Husqvarna builds mid-priced lawn tractors, and the YTH2146XP is a good example of their handiwork. This model should appeal to homeowners with larger lawns, up to 2-1/2 acres, who want value in their lawn tractor.
The first thing we liked about this model was the engine. It's a commercial-grade 21-hp Kawasaki V-Twin (two-cylinder) OHV engine that should outlive many other engines typically installed in lawn tractors. We also liked the transmission, a TuffTorq K45, one of the most popular transmissions found in mid-range lawn tractors. The engine hood is metal with air vents on the side. Finally, we liked the cruise control that makes cutting the grass easier on long stretches of lawn.
The cut on the YTH2146XP is 46 inches wide with a side discharge. A side-to-rear bagger chute is optional, as is a mulch kit. A nose roller along with four rollers at the mowing deck corners minimize scalping the lawn on uneven ground. The three blades are engaged/disengaged with a push/pull electric PTO switch located on the dash. You can attach a small utility trailer to the back of this model and pull it around. Other options include a snow blade for winter use.
We also liked some of the extras on the YTH2146XP that are not usually found on less expensive models from other manufacturers. First, this Husqvarna model has a real front bumper. The metal used throughout is heavier-duty than comparable units. It comes standard with front headlights and rear brake lights. Fuel tank level is easy to visually check, since it is below the driver's seat. And we found it easy to step on and off the tractor, and the high-back adjustable seat is relatively comfortable. The owner's manual is 44-pages long, well written and includes enlarged views of mechanical parts as well as handy maintenance and troubleshooting charts.
Another maintenance feature is the hour-meter that not only tells you how many hours your tractor has run, but it also reminds you of maintenance requirements. You can perform most of the maintenance, such as replacing oil and filters, yourself.
Bottom line: The Husqvarna YTH2146XP is a well-built, well-powered, mid-range lawn tractor that can mow up to about 2-1/2 acres of grass, and it will most likely last for more than a decade.
Pros: Strong engine, solidly built, extra features
Cons: Not the least expensive lawn tractor
