Husqvarna 65021CHV self-propelled mower
Date Published: 7/30/08
The Husqvarna 65021CHV self-propelled gas mower offers several noteworthy features that you might not expect to find in a low-cost mower. The unit features a 6.5-hp Briggs & Stratton overhead valve engine with enough muscle to handle a variety of turf situations. We like the environmentally friendly benefits offered by the overhead valve design, namely low emission levels, smoother starting and a cleaner, more efficient engine. And whether you like to mulch, bag or discharge grass clippings from the side, this unit comes with a 3-in-1 kit that makes it easy to change between each cutting option. The 21-inch, 12-gauge stamped steel deck is designed to create a better vacuum for easier and more efficient bagging. Also included is Husqvarna's Dustless bagger, which does a better job of capturing smaller particles, reducing the amount of dust that you might typically encounter when you mow.
Another noteworthy feature is the AutoWalk variable-speed front wheel drive system. We found that mowers at this price point typically offer only one speed setting, which puts a limit as to how fast you can go. The AutoWalk feature is controlled by a lever that allows you to vary the speed -- squeeze it and the mower goes faster, ease the pressure on the lever and the mower slows down, let go of the lever and the mower comes to a stop. That way you have the versatility needed to accommodate a variety of mowing conditions. Sure, the front wheel drive doesn't deliver the same performance as a rear wheel drive, but it's hard to find both rear wheel drive and variable speed in a mower at this price point. When faced against this decision, let your mowing conditions be your guide. Rough or hilly terrain? Opt for the rear wheel drive. If you have a nice flat lawn, a front wheel drive should deliver all the performance you need.
If you're looking for better traction and control, you'll appreciate the hefty 12-inch high rear wheels. This feature makes it a bit easier to maneuver on tall grass or uneven terrain, especially for a mower with a front wheel drive. Ball bearing wheels are mounted on heavy 1/4-inch steel adjusting brackets for better performance and an added measure of maneuverability. The handlebar has a "comfort grip" foam handle for added comfort, though the blade control bail -- a rod that is held against the handlebar for the mower to operate -- is round rather than flat and lacks a plastic cover, so it's not as comfortable to hold. The handlebar is adjustable and also folds by loosening the wing nuts on either side. Each wheel adjusts individually to one of four cutting heights from 1-1/2 to 3 inches -- a range that may be somewhat limiting depending on your mowing situation. We were disappointed in the comfort and location of the back wheel control levers and found them hard to access -- especially for people with short fingers or weak hands.
Despite a few minor flaws, we feel the upgraded features give this mower an added advantage. For a good all-around performer with deluxe features not usually found in a low-cost mower, we feel the Husqvarna 65021CHV self-propelled gas mower is a hard one to beat.
Pros: 3-in-1 operation, dustless bagger, variable speed, overhead valve engine, 12-inch rear wheels, ball bearing wheels
Cons: No deluxe bail, individual cutting height adjustments with back wheel control levers hard to access
