HP LaserJet 3050 All-in-One

Date Published: 3/23/07

The LaserJet 3050 multifunction device from Hewlett-Packard is an interesting unit. It's not an overly powerful device, but it does a lot of things adequately. It doesn't offer color prints, but it provides laser-sharp output. Finally, it doesn't offer the type of price (less than $300) you'd typically find with a laser device, and that's a good thing.

This multifunction device can print at speeds up to 19 pages per minute in draft mode, but it remains a fast unit when printing in best mode. The LaserJet 3050's print resolution is 1200x1200, which is outstanding for a laser device. The copier function also creates very sharp copies and works quickly at about 19 ppm. The LaserJet 3050 needs less than 15 seconds to go from pressing the copy button to yielding the first page, which is a good performance level.

The LaserJet 3050's fax function is solid, too. You can send fax documents at speeds up to 20 ppm, and the LaserJet 3050's 30-sheet automatic document feeder makes it handy to send multi-page faxes. This unit contains 64MB of memory, which allows it to store up to 110 pages if the unit's 250-sheet paper tray is empty.

The scanner is the most disappointing function with this unit. Scans just aren't as sharp as they should be.
The LaserJet 3050 has a few other minor drawbacks: It can run a little noisy, so it might not work well in the middle of your office. It's also has a big footprint, measuring about 17x17 inches. The LaserJet 3050 could be a little easier to use; the control panel just didn't seem as intuitive as most HP printers and multifunction devices. We'd prefer a glass-top surface for copies. Finally, its maximum monthly output is 7,000 pages, which is less than most laser devices.

Overall, it's a good unit. More powerful laser multifunction devices exist, but the LaserJet 3050's price is lower than most.

Pros: Good value for a laser device, sharp print and copy output, strong fax features
Cons: Scanner could be sharper, no glass-top surface, large footprint, unit can run noisy
