HP iPaq hw6925
Date Published: 5/7/08The line between PDAs and smart phones continues to blur, and with HP throwing a GPS device into the mix with their iPaq hw6925 it's even more difficult to make a distinction.
But from a consumer standpoint, you don't have to. The hw6925 includes pretty much everything you could want from a mobile device, including a quad-band GSM cell phone that can be used around the world, GPS navigation, a variety of wireless connectivity options, and even a built-in camera.
So how do all these functions work when you pile them all into a 6.3 ounce device? Not too shabbily. First off, the hw6925 is running Windows Mobile 5.0, so you're able to view all your Office documents (in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) while you're on the go. This PDA also plays audio and video files via Windows Media Player.
The three-inch screen with 240x240 resolution isn't the largest when it comes to traditional PDAs (although it's big for a smartphone), but images were crisp and video played fairly clearly on the hw6925. There's also an attachable flip cover that helps prevent screen scratches.
The 416MHz Intel processor and 64MB of RAM offer decent core power for running applications. The storage space is limited, with only 45MB available for user files. Luckily, you can expand that via the available miniSD slot and prices for these flash memory cards are nearly as low as those for traditional SD cards.
Manipulation is handled via the touchscreen as well as a QWERTY keyboard along the bottom of the PDA. The buttons are small, but they're backlit and well separated from each other, so thumb typing is potentially fast and actually quite easy.
As we mentioned above, this PDA features a GPS receiver, so you can use it as a mapping device as well. If you purchase the hw6925 through AT&T, you can also consider their optional navigation service with directions and points of interest for a monthly fee.
The hw6925 features built-in 802.11b wireless for connecting to the Internet via WiFi hotspots as well as AT&T EDGE capability so you can get online from almost anywhere. The Bluetooth connectivity makes it easy to synch contacts and files with your desktop PC.
HP also includes a 1.3-megapixel digital camera complete with flash on this PDA. It can also record video and pictures can be set to include your GPS coordinates so you can always return to exactly where you snapped a shot. Very neat.
Users in the market for a PDA and cell phone that pretty much does it all won't be disappointed in the hw6925. There are a few sacrifices to be made--storage space and screen resolution, for example--for getting everything packed into one device, but all the features work and play well together on the HP iPaq hw6925.
