HP Deskjet F380

Date Published: 1/31/08

If the Deskjet F380 inkjet multifunction device from Hewlett-Packard grabs your attention with its sub-$100 price tag, you're not alone. However, once you start researching this unit's feature list and performance, you'll probably understand the low starting price.

This device is extremely slow when printing in anything but draft mode. If you try to print a photo in best mode, be prepared to spend 10 or more minutes per print; then the print quality for most photos is hit and miss. (We wouldn't recommend even trying to print photos with the Deskjet F380.) Even printing a text document in best mode takes several minutes, although text quality is adequate.

HP claims the Deskjet F380's printer runs at speeds up to 20 pages per minute, but the text quality in draft mode is below average. The Deskjet F380's print quality is below average, too, ranging from a 600x600 dpi resolution in black to 4800x1200 dpi in color.

If you need fax options, skip the Deskjet F380. It does offer very limited scan and copy functions, which probably isn't a big surprise for a unit in this price range. The copier claims to run at speeds up to 20 ppm in draft mode, but it will run slower than that for most documents. You only can resize documents at between 50 and 200 percent, and you only can make up to nine copies at a time, both of which are far below average. The quality of the Deskjet F380's scanned images is hit and miss, unfortunately.

Finally, the Deskjet F380 tends to use ink faster than other multifunction devices, meaning its low initial price is a bit misleading because you'll probably end up spending more on ink replacement cartridges in the long run. Despite its low price, it's tough to recommend the Deskjet F380, even to those looking to save money up front. Far more powerful and versatile inkjet multifunction options are available for another $100.

Pros: Low starting price
Cons: Slow printer, inconsistent print and scan quality, no fax capabilities, copier features are below average
