Hewlett-Packard's 1240 fax machine provides a good mixture of fax and telephone features, making it a versatile option for a home office.

The HP 1240 can send documents at speeds up to 20ppm. The unit has a 100-sheet paper tray, and if the it runs out of paper, it can store up to 200 pages in memory. The HP 1240 can send and receive faxes in color, and it offers a 20-sheet automatic document feeder, which is handy for faxing multiple-sheet documents. The telephone features include caller ID (given you subscribe to caller ID service) and a speakerphone option.

If you need a makeshift copier, the HP 1240 will work well in this capacity. It can make black copies at speeds up to 17ppm (and color copies up to 12ppm). It can resize the original at between 25 and 200 percent. The unit isn't a great option for a busy office; HP recommends no more than 1,500 prints per month.
