Those needing basic functions in a budget-priced desktop fax machine will appreciate the capabilities of Hewlett-Packard's 1040 Fax. This machine costs less than $100, but it'll give many SOHO environments plenty of faxing power.

The 1040 Fax can send documents at speeds up to 10 ppm, which is not at the top of the market, but will work well for most offices. The 50-sheet paper tray probably is not large enough for a busy office that receives a lot of faxes. If the 1040 Fax runs out of paper, it can store up to 100 pages in memory. This desktop fax machine has a 10-page automatic document feeder as well.

The 1040 Fax uses inkjet printing, but it only can accept black ink cartridges; it has no color printing capabilities.

Like most desktop fax machines, the 1040 Fax can work as a makeshift copier, running at speeds up to 1.5 ppm.
