Hoover Telios Canister Cleaner S3332

Date Published: 7/2/08

The Hoover Telios Canister Vacuum Cleaner S3332 certainly looks like a solid selection. It has an attractive red exterior, a number of useful attachments and a slim design, so we were eager to put this canister vacuum through its paces.

We began by taking a closer look at its features. The Hoover Telios has a telescoping wand that can be adjusted to the user's height. This is a nice feature, particularly for those of above-average height (read: fewer low backaches from stooping). The vacuum's attachments neatly nest in a storage compartment on its front. The Telios comes with three attachments: a dusting brush, upholstery tool and crevice tool. The Telios S3332 has an automatic-rewind feature that gobbles the power cord as soon as it's no longer needed. This is convenient, but unfortunately the power cord is too short. At a paltry 18 feet, the power cord is only about half the length one really needs to efficiently vacuum a large room.

We were pleased to discover the Telios can be used on carpets or bare floors. The brushes on the nozzle can be turned off to use the vacuum on tile, hardwood or linoleum floors --without fear of damaging the floors. The vacuum's body has two large wheels, a swivel caster and a slim design ideal for vacuuming stairs.

The suction of the vacuum can be manually adjusted. This is a useful addition that not all vacuums offer; we like to adjust the suction when using the attachments on drapes or upholstery. We were disappointed to find that even at its most powerful setting, the vacuum's suction is poor. It just wasn't able to pick up large debris or pet hair as well as we expected. The hose swivels 360 degrees and this makes it easier to maneuver the wand. Aside from the poorly performing suction, the Telios has what seems to be a major flaw: The expandable, accordion-style hose comes loose. During our testing, it lost its grip, unexpectedly, on multiple occasions. Because it lacks a secure connection on either end, the hose separates from the wand, the attachments and the canister.

The Hoover Telios Canister Vacuum S3332 has all the right features and appears to be a quality vacuum. In this case, however, looks can be deceiving. Even though the Telios costs only about $110, it doesn't seem worth it.

Pros: Telescoping wand, useful attachments
Cons: Hose separates from canister, power cord too short
