Hoover Self-Propelled Wind Tunnel Ultra Upright U6454900
Date Published: 5/6/08
The Hoover U6454-900 is a variation on Hoover's Wind Tunnel design. The Ultra Upright U6454-900 offers a self-propelled feature and requires the use of traditional paper replacement bags.
A good choice for those who have limited strength with which to maneuver a vacuum, the Ultra's wheels offer a power-assist feature that helps move the unit backward and forward. Triggered by a slight push or pull on the flexible handle, this feature causes a slight jerking motion, which may take some time to become accustomed to. One disadvantage to this system is that the self-propelled feature adds weight to the vacuum and may make it difficult for some people to carry it up a flight of stairs.
Featuring a disposable bag for dust collection, this model is recommended for asthmatics and allergy sufferers because dirt is less likely to be released into the air than with a bagless design. Since the bag is stored inside the machine you can't see when the bag is full, so you'll need to remember to check the bag often to prevent overfilling and clogging. Although bagless models are very popular for their convenience, some consumers just prefer bags -- especially the high-quality HEPA filtration bags from 3M found on this model. Replacement bags for vacuums can sometimes be difficult to find in stores, but we found fairly good availability of these Wind Tunnel Type Y bags in vacuum specialty shops and on the Internet.
Equipped with a rather unusual Dirt Finder feature, this Ultra Upright uses a sensor to determine when carpet is really free of dirt and debris. As you vacuum over areas of heavy soil you can hear dirt entering the machine and see the indicator lights adjust. Continue to vacuum an area until you no longer hear the dirt or see the lights, then move on to the next section of carpet. Our testers appreciated the control this feature offered and preferred to take the time to vacuum more heavily soiled areas, while saving time by skimming over those areas that contained little dirt.
Tools on the Hoover U6454-900 include a powered upholstery brush, which -- like most such brushes -- isn't any more useful than a regular upholstery tool. Although it adds little to the performance of the vacuum, the powered brush is a popular tool that tends to increase sales of specific models. For this reason, don't let a power brush be the deciding factor when choosing between vacuums.
For those looking for a bagged model that's easy to push, with just a single story to clean, Hoover's Wind Tunnel Ultra Upright U6454-900 is a reasonable choice in the less-than $300 price range.
Pros: Self-propelled, easy to push, 3M's HEPA bags provide good filtration
Cons: Heavier than non-self-propelled models, takes a while to adjust to motion of self-propelled model, requires purchase of vacuum bags
