Hoover Savvy Bagless Upright Vacuum U8174900

Date Published: 5/2/08

The Hoover Savvy Bagless Upright Vacuum U8174900 follows the newest trend in vacuums as it foregoes a bag system for a collection canister. The canister holds dirt and other debris picked up by the vacuum. The collection canister is emptied by removing it from the vacuum and opening a lid. The result? A veritable dust cloud that spreads dirt over carpets once again. And thus ends our piqued interest in the Hoover Savvy Bagless Upright.

Nearly all of the features built into the Hoover Savvy Bagless Upright sound great, but not all of them perform as well as we expected. It uses WindTunnel technology to suction dirt and debris from carpets, and it also can be used on bare floors. It has a HEPA filter to trap pollen and other allergens. It has a decent selection of onboard tools, including a turbo hand tool with a rotating brush. We also like the Hoover Savvy's wide 15-inch cleaning path because it makes short work of large rooms. Plus, it has a low-profile hood that allows it to easily slip under beds and furniture.

The Hoover Savvy has a sensor/indicator light system that lets the user know whether carpets are clean or dirty. This feature is a bit gimmicky and we don't think it really enhances the vacuum's appeal. The Hoover Savvy has decent suction, but it begins to lose suction power as the collection canister fills. It also doesn't seem to have powerful enough suction to fully operate the attachments. We thought we'd like the ability to use this vacuum on bare floors as well as carpets. However, it just doesn't work very well on bare floors. The vacuum's exhaust blows dust and debris out of the way of the vacuum, which makes it nearly impossible to catch up with these particles and suck them into the vacuum. At 25 pounds, the Hoover Savvy is heavy. It's hard to carry and not very easy to push. It's a chore to move it from one floor of a home to another floor or from step to step when cleaning stairs.

In short, the negatives far outweigh the positives. Although the Hoover Savvy has attachments, they don't work very well. It can clean multiple surfaces, but not as well as it should. It has a few gimmicky features and jumps on the bagless technology bandwagon, but it's not worth the price. There are vacuums that cost half the price that work far, far better.

Pros: HEPA filter
Cons: Price, poor suction, heavy
