The Hoover Mach 5 U5194900 is a bagless upright vacuum that works powerfully and operates quietly. Like other bagless vacuums, the Hoover Mach 5 pulls dirt and debris into a collection canister. This view-through canister is part of a HEPA filtration system that includes a lifetime HEPA filter. The HEPA filtration system traps dust mites and common pollens, like those from grass and ragweed, as well as other allergens. Since the HEPA filter is a lifetime filter, this eliminates the cost of replacement filters. Of course, because this model is a bagless vacuum, you don't have the replacement costs of vacuum bags, either. The collection canister has an easy-empty design. The bottom of the canister flips open at the push of a button.

The Hoover Mach 5 has several thoughtful "extras," including an automatically retractable cord. Unfortunately, the cord is only 28 feet in length and this severely limits the range of the vacuum. When using it, we often find ourselves moving the electric cord from one power outlet to another, which is an inconvenience. The Mach 5 has several useful attachments. We particularly think the pet hair cleaning tool is useful. This rotating brush really powers pet hair off upholstery and problem areas like stairs. There is also a dusting brush, crevice tool and extension wand.

The Mach 5 has stiff rotating bristles on the main vacuum head that effectively pull dirt, pet hair and other debris out of carpets. These bristles also do a nice job of fluffing the carpet nap as well. One of the things we like best about the Mach 5's vacuum head is that the rotating brushes automatically stop when the vacuum clicks into an upright position. This prevents the rotating brushes from causing undue wear-and-tear on carpets if the vacuum remains stationary while one is using the attachments. Plus, the brushes can be turned off manually. This is helpful when using the vacuum on bare floors and helps prevent possible surface damage. The Mach 5 has a wide 15-inch path that makes short work of large rooms, and we like its soft bumpers to protect furniture. The adjustable height handle makes the Mach5 a breeze to push even though it is a heavy machine and not self-propelled. Overall, the Hoover Mach5 earns high marks for its powerful performance and convenient features.
