Honda HRS216PDA Gasoline-Powered Push Mower
Date Published: 7/29/08
The economical Honda HRS216PDA gasoline-powered push mower doesn't economize when it comes to the engine. We found the Honda engine to be smooth and easy to start. An internal timing belt results in quieter overall operation. That combined with an engine designed with reduced valve train and gear noise proved for a mowing experience that was distinctively easier on the ears. And with ultra low emission levels, the CARB compliant engine offers a great way to go green when it comes to mowing your lawn.
The 5.5-horsepower GCV160 engine delivers superior fuel efficiency and plenty of four-stroke power for better mowing despite the season. The compact engine design includes a tough nylon overhead cam and uniblock construction, making this engine lighter and more compact than any engine in its class. The reduced weight results in a mower that is easier to maneuver -- an added benefit when it comes to mowing your lawn with a push mower.
This mower carries the lowest price for a Honda push mower, making it a good value for a price-conscious buyer looking for a side discharge chute with the Honda name. If you'd prefer to have your lawn clippings go in a grass bag rather than discharged out the side, the optional bag is easier than ever to take off, empty and reattach. Another optional accessory we recommend is twin-blade mulching, giving you better mulching performance by cutting grass into finer pieces that quickly decompose.
In addition to the easy-pull recoil starter, we especially like the fact that this mower comes equipped with an electronic ignition -- a feature typically not standard on other manufacturer's push mowers. Once the mower is started, the Zone Start feature ensures a safe operation as the blade (engine) is designed to stop within 3 seconds if you let go of the mower safety handle. The ErgoActive easy-folding handlebars bring added comfort and fold for easy storage.
Wheels can make or break your mowing experience, especially when using a push mower. All four wheels on this mower are exactly the same size -- 8 inches. Though mowers with larger rear wheels generally handle bumps and uneven ground better then mowers with same-sized wheels, Honda has designed the rear wheels on this mower with quality ball bearings rather than the more typical bushings. Mowers with bushing wheels don't roll as easily as mowers with ball bearing wheels. As a result this mower is easier to push. Six mowing height adjustments ranging from 1 inch to 3-1/2 inches accommodate most mowing needs. Each wheel adjusts independently, which can be a bother if you adjust your wheels more than once a season. However, we found the adjustments easy to maneuver.
With a world-renowned engine, easy bagging, folding handlebars and environmentally friendly design, we found the Honda HRS216PDA gasoline push mower to be a low-maintenance, high-quality mower.
