Homelite MightyLite UT21506 gas string trimmer
Date Published: 8/6/08
Equipped with a low emission, 26cc 2-cycle engine, the Homelite MightyLite UT21506 gas string trimmer offers plenty of power at an affordable price. In fact, this unit is one of the lowest-priced trimmers on the market, but its performance ranks fairly highly when compared to some higher-priced trimmers. Weighing in at a mere 7.9 pounds, this tool is also among the lightest trimmers you'll find, so it's easy to handle and maneuver. The bump and feed head is a single line exit, yet the quality of cut is surprisingly good for a single-string trimmer.
Besides its low weight, this inexpensive tool also includes the new Rotochoke for easier starting, improved throttle design and tool-free assembly. We also like the simplicity of the single-trigger operation and location. And while you may get a workout trimming tall grass and weeds, you won't be subjected to excessively loud noise while doing so; in fact, we liken this unit's sound to that of a bumblebee.
Our main complaint with the MightyLite UT21506 is that it doesn't have great balance and the angle of the bend of the shaft could be just a bit better. When using this trimmer, you have to make a conscious effort to hold the top end of the tool at a higher angle so that the cutting head is on the same horizontal plane as the grass. We also think that the starting procedure -- with its three-position choke -- could be simpler. All things considered, though, we feel it's a very good tool at a very good price.
Pros: Lightweight, low-emission 26cc engine, budget price, easy to handle, bump and feed head, good performance, tool-free assembly, low noise level
Cons: Balance could be better, bend of shaft isn't ideal, three-position choke seems needlessly complex
