Hitachi 65F710 65-inch HDTV

Date Published: 10/26/07

The Hitachi 65F710 is a 65-inch HDTV that is CableCARD-compatible, potentially eliminating two set-top boxes and simplifying life for users. This snazzy CRT rear-projection unit sports a pale silver finish and smooth, curvy lines, and the cabinet arrives in two pieces, making delivery of this large TV possible even through cramped hallways. The wide-format fine-pitch screen is protected from scratches by a high-contrast shield that helps enhance the picture.

Images are richly defined and detailed thanks to a 4MB 3-D Y/C digital comb filter and the automatic up-conversion of all non-1,080i signals to 1,080p. Convergence is adjusted using the automatic 117-point system or a 9-point manual system to ensure a continuously sharp picture. Color can be fine-tuned with a four-color system rather than the two-color system found on most competing models, and a special setting for black and white film creates the best possible display of old movies. Inputs can be adjusted differently for day and night viewing, and users can switch from day to night settings manually or have it done automatically via a built-in timer.

The stereo speakers are rated at 24 watts of audio output, and they can serve as the center channel in a home theater system. The speakers can be configured to simulate surround sound, and BBE sound enhancement is included. When watching movies, automatic 3:2 pulldown ensures the smoothest possible images. The 65F710 has three viewing modes for HD content and six for standard-definition programming. The split-screen (POP) option works with high-definition as well as standard-definition content, a feature not available in many competing models.

Other convenience features include sleep and on timers, closed captions, and parental controls. The front panel houses audio/video and S-video inputs, while the rear panel has an HDMI interface, two antenna inputs, four audio/video inputs, two S-video inputs, and two wideband component video inputs. An optical digital audio output and a fixed/variable audio output provide the means to link to external speakers. The remote control has illuminated buttons and a simple layout.
