Hitachi 60VF820 60-inch LCD rear-projection HDTV

Date Published: 10/26/07

The 60-inch Hitachi UltraVision 60VF820 is an impressive LCD rear-projection HDTV that combines advanced features, strong performance, and smart design. The black metallic finish looks very classy, and the front of the cabinet is free of inputs or controls. The entire unit is less than 20 inches in depth, with stereo speakers flanking the wide-format screen. Internal NTSC and ATSC tuners and a CableCARD slot reduce the need for additional set-top boxes.

The 60VR820's LCD engine sends a crisp, highly detailed picture to the high-contrast, low-reflection screen, displaying high-definition content at the native resolution of 1,280X720. Film content is automatically adapted for video viewing using 3:2 pulldown technology, ensuring a faithful image with smooth action. A 3-D Y/C digital comb filter removes dot crawl and other annoying interference. Color settings are memorized for each input, with a black-and-white color temperature setting available for watching old movies.

The internal audio system uses three-way speakers to put out 40 total watts of power, yielding plenty of detailed sound to accompany the impressive video. The 60VF820's speakers can be bypassed if you prefer using an external sound system, or you can utilize the TV speakers as the center channel in a home theater speaker system. Multiple PIP functions are available, with most options accepting both standard analog content and digital sources. Separate day and night video settings are available for each of the inputs, with a timer to switch modes automatically as day turns to night. Other handy features include on/sleep timers, parental V-chip controls, and a two-level mute for softening or silencing the audio.

The jack pack is particularly strong on the 60VF820. This HDTV offers five audio/video inputs (one on the side panel), three S-video inputs (one side), two wideband component video inputs, two HDMI inputs, two RF inputs, a center-channel input, an audio/video output with S-video, an optical digital audio output, and a fixed/variable audio output. The 60VF820's universal remote control can handle up to four additional components, yet it manages to maintain a simple layout without clutter.
