Hitachi 57F59 57-Inch CRT Projection TV
Date Published: 4/28/08
Hitachi's 57-inch 57F59 uses traditional CRT projection technology and digital video processing to create a clear picture with deep black levels, and it comes at a reasonable price. However, while the 57F59 has a digital tuner and is capable of displaying 720p and 1,080i images, it does not include a high-definition (ATSC) tuner. Thus, this is an HD-ready TV and not an HDTV. An external HD receiver is required to view HD content.
In addition to the missing HD tuner, the 57F59 also lacks a QAM tuner and CableCARD slot, so this set is not digital cable-ready. It includes a full complement of picture-in-picture options, but a second tuner is needed to enable them. Like all CRT projection sets, the 57F59 is considerably larger and bulkier than its microdisplay counterparts. Thankfully, the cabinet is delivered in two pieces, making it much easier to move to its desired position.
CRT projection sets often suffer from outside light, but the 57F59 presents a bright picture in most ambient light conditions. A 3-D Y/C digital comb filter helps combat rainbow effects and dot crawl. Necessary periodic convergence adjustments are made simple with an automatic digital convergence system that can be engaged at the touch of a button.
The stereo speakers in the base produce 12 watts of output per channel, and the 57F59 can simulate surround sound. The speakers can serve as the center channel in a home theater system. Other convenience features include parental controls and a timer that activates separate day and night settings for each input.
This big-screen TV will no doubt be connected to additional components, and the 57F59 is ready for them. The input/output selection includes five composite video inputs (one on the front panel), three S-video inputs (one front), two wideband component video inputs, an HDMI input, a center-channel speaker input and an RF input, as well as a fixed/variable audio output and an optical digital audio connection. The universal remote control has a tapered design that makes it comfortable to hold, and the button layout is refreshingly simple.
While the Hitachi 57F59 offers a good big-screen picture at a relatively affordable price, its lack of key features may compel shoppers to look elsewhere.
Pros: Two-piece cabinet makes it more manageable to move, inexpensive
Cons: No HD tuner, not digital cable-ready, requires second tuner to enable PIP functions
