Hitachi 55VG825 55-inch LCD rear-projection HDTV
Date Published: 10/26/07
Hitachi's 55VG825 is a 55-inch HDTV that relies on LCD rear-projection technology to create a crisp, lively image. This wide-format monitor sits atop Hitachi's UltraVision CineForm line, and it packs in the high-end features. The metallic finish creates a sleek look, which is reinforced by the slim depth of the monitor. The location of the control buttons and inputs on the side of the cabinet ensures that nothing distracts from the exceptional picture.
All input formats are presented in the 55VG825's native resolution of 1,280X720. Picture quality is excellent, and it is assisted by a 3-D Y/C digital comb filter, advanced 26-point video processing, four-step black-level enhancement, and automatic 3:2 processing of film content. With classic movie buffs in mind, a special setting is optimized for black and white content. Other settings include three HD aspect modes, six standard picture modes, separate settings for day and night viewing, and four-color temperature memory. The internal stereo system delivers a generous 40 watts through the three-way speakers. A two-level mute is available, as is simulated surround sound, BBE sound enhancement, and the option of using the TV as a center speaker in a home theater speaker system.
The competition is fierce among big-screen HDTVs, but the 55VG825 holds up well in terms of features and connectability, offering split-screen HDTV viewing, digital photo viewing, favorite channel memory, access to the TV Guide On Screen program guide, and parental locks with V-chip screening. The rear panel is home to four composite video inputs, two S-video inputs, two RF inputs, two HDMI connections, two component video inputs, an optical digital audio output, two IR outputs, a CableCARD slot, and a center channel input, among others. The side panel adds an audio/video/S-video input and a USB connection that can be used with a digital camera.
Given the prodigious feature list, the 55VG825's universal remote control is remarkably simple, in part due to the roll-and-click scroll wheel that controls volume and channel changes. The remote can also manage an associated DVD player, VCR, cable box, satellite receiver, and another set-top box. The price of the 55VG825 is a bit higher than that of some comparable-size LCD RP HDTVs, but the combination of performance and features may justify the cost.Warranty
