Hitachi 42HDT79 42-Inch Plasma HDTV

Date Published: 2/19/08

The 42HDT79 is a member of Hitachi's well-regarded UltraVision CineForm line, and this 42-inch plasma HDTV lives up to its billing. With a full 1,080i high-definition display, digital cable readiness and a plethora of useful features, the 42HDT79 is an ideal centerpiece to a high-end home theater.

The 42HDT79's native resolution of 1,024X1,080 displays every pixel of 1,080i high-definition content, producing an impressively sharp picture that most 42-inch plasma televisions cannot match. A four-step black enhancement process results in deep blacks and excellent detail in shadows, and Hitachi claims its PictureMaster HD III processor can theoretically produce 281 trillion separate colors. Regardless of the actual number, the 42HDT79's picture is a sight to behold. Thanks to a selection of screen savers and other built-in functions, there's little need to worry about plasma's inherent burn-in problem.

The stereo system relies on a pair of three-way speakers rated at 18 watts of audio output each, creating a lively audio experience. The speakers are located on either side of the screen, which increases the 42HDT79's overall footprint but provides a more separated stereo image. Audio options include bass-tone enhancement and simulated surround sound, or you can route the audio via the rear panel's optical digital audio output to a home theater receiver.

The 42HDT79 comes with a powered swivel stand that can be controlled from the included universal remote, so you can aim the TV without getting up from your seat. The stand also detaches if you want to mount the monitor on the wall with an optional bracket. There are separate video settings for day and night viewing, and a timer automatically switches from one to the other. The 42HDT79 includes access to the TV Guide On Screen interactive program guide, and it has a full complement of PIP options. Unfortunately, the single-tuner design requires a second tuner to enable full PIP functionality.

The connection selection is another highlight, as the 42HDT79 includes three HDMI inputs (including one on the side panel), three component video inputs (one on the side panel), two S-video inputs, two IR outputs for creating a home theater network that can be controlled via the universal remote, the optical digital audio output and a CableCARD slot. The 42HDT79 also has a USB input that allows you to connect a digital camera for viewing pictures on the big screen.

With its 1,080i picture and a host of convenient features, the Hitachi 42HDT79 is a standout among 42-inch plasma HDTVs.

Pros: Full 1,080i display, power swivel stand, three-way speakers
Cons: No PC input, second tuner required for full PIP
