The Hitachi 37HDL52 is a 37-inch HDTV with a slim LCD screen and an excellent feature set. The wide-format flat screen is attractively framed in black, with control buttons out of sight but easy to reach along the side edge. Stereo speakers are located below the screen to minimize the 37HDL52's width. The motorized black pedestal stand makes it incredibly easy to swivel the monitor, allowing you to adjust the angle of the screen without leaving your seat. In fact, you may have to wrestle the remote away from your children, who will no doubt want to sit and swivel the TV all day. The stand can be removed for mounting the 37HDL52 on the wall, although additional hardware is required.

The picture is refreshingly bright and sharp, with a native resolution of 1,366X768 and a 3-D Y/C digital comb filter to eliminate dot crawl and rainbow effects. Both NTSC (standard) and ATSC (high-definition) tuners are built in, and standard programming can be presented in any of six aspect modes. The internal stereo system provides only 20 watts of audio output, which is less than with some competing models, but the 37HDL52 also offers the option of using the TV as the center speaker in a home theater speaker array.

Among the 37HDL52's many convenience features are a sleep timer, a full-screen picture freeze, multiple PIP options, audio and video setting memory for each input, a favorite channel memory and V-chip parental controls. This LCD TV is multifunctional, with PC compatibility and several high-definition inputs for digital sources such as DVD players and a satellite system. The 37HDL52 has a combination composite video/S-video input on the side panel, while the rear panel offers another S-video input, a DVI input, two wideband component video inputs, two RF inputs, an RGB D-sub analog input with audio, and a composite video output. The included remote control is a standard model with several color-coded buttons for important functions, and its intuitive layout makes operation a breeze.
